The Masquerade ball was in full swing by the time Evelyn and Sabrina arrived that evening.

Sabrina had rented a floor-length, glimmering gold and silver dress stitched with beads that caught the light every time she moved. The beading was reminiscent of a flapper-era dress and it was fun to swish when she walked. She’d found a matching gold cravat for Evelyn and they’d spent more than ten minutes standing in front of the mirror in Evelyn’s suite trying to figure out how to tie it.

YouTube had saved the day in the end, and when they turned toward the mirror, Sabrina linked her arm in Evelyn’s and nodded her approval. “We look hot.”

Then they donned their masks and went downstairs to the party.

The ball was held in one of the largest rooms of the convention center. It had been transformed with Masquerade’s signature gothic decor, with a long, dark wood bar along one wall and a dance floor taking up most of the center of the room.

There were round tables and bar-height tables along the perimeter of the room, all with black linens and flickering tea candles. And there was a VIP area behind velvet ropes at the far end of the space. Sabrina nodded to it as she spotted a couple dancing there.

“Do you think we could get in?” she asked. “You’ve got a VIP ShudderCon pass, don’t you?”

“I do,” Evelyn said. “Let’s get a drink first.”

“Are you still nervous about being recognized?” Sabrina asked.

“The fans out here don’t really know my face,” she explained as she led the way to the bar, Sabrina’s hand still looped around her arm. “But the VIP area is full of actors, directors, and producers who do.”

Sabrina shot a longing look toward the velvet ropes. She’d pretty much put to rest the idea of selling her script this weekend, but she couldn’t help thinking of everyone in the VIP area as a captive audience. If she could get back there and start telling them about Agent Gray… But that wasn’t why she was here—she was here for Evelyn.

Besides, if Sabrina started pitching in the VIP area, she’d probably get hauled out of there faster than Meaghan and her erotic fan fiction got dragged out of the Devil’s Daughter panel.

So Sabrina followed Evelyn to the bar and they ordered a couple of drinks from Rosa, who’d relocated from the Trick or Treat for the evening. Evelyn got a gin and juice, and Sabrina turned her nose up at the strong, piney smell, then ordered a Black and Orange.

“I hear those things are awful,” Evelyn said with a snort. “Why are you drinking that?”

“I’ve developed a taste for them,” Sabrina said. “Want a sip?”

“I don’t think it’ll mix well with my gin.”

“Live a little.” Sabrina held her glass out to Evelyn, who reluctantly took it. Sabrina watched her take a small, tentative sip. Evelyn’s tongue snaked out to lick the foam from her upper lip and it sent a little ripple of desire through Sabrina, followed by satisfaction as Evelyn took a bigger sip, then handed the glass back.
